On the Road Again

Life can change in an instant. Bob Morrissey was only 43 when he began experiencing stomach pain. He thought it was an ulcer, but it turned out to be a rare and incurable form of appendiceal cancer.

Due to its rarity, this type of cancer is not well studied or understood. Morrissey is looking to change this by raising funds for cancer research. And his Teamster brothers and sisters are along for the ride.

Teamsters Against Cancer was created by Leif Thornton, Vice President of Teamsters Local 82 in Boston, after Morrissey, his good friend and fellow Teamster, received his diagnosis. Teamsters Against Cancer is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate about appendiceal cancer and raise money to fund research about this specific cancer.

The Teamsters Against Cancer annual bike ride will take Teamster participants to 24 New England locals throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont and Maine. The 900-mile ride will begin and end at Local 82, with a finishing party to be held June 16.

Once riders make it home, however, their work is not done. On June 26, a second ride will be held at Local 653 in Easton, Mass. The Brockton Police Ride Against Cancer will cover 25 miles of pedaling through Easton’s scenic country roads.

Teamsters Against Cancer challenge all Teamsters to participate and donate. Go to their website, www.teamstersagainstcancer.org to find out more.
